So you can click and get older versions of R. If you can't, then- are no longer supported in the last release of R. MATT DENNY : If you have a really, really old version of Mac OS, I suggest you upgrade. It will automatically download a package, which will then- a package file, a PKG, whatever that stands for, which will just automatically guide you through the process of installing R. So it's going to save this on my desktop. MATT DENNY : is you're going to want to click on this package file. They usually come up with funny names, like Ridiculous Wombat, or something else. MATT DENNY : so it will probably say something perhaps a little bit later- R 3.4.1 is currently the latest version of R available. And one of the things that you will see- so I'm recording this in the summer of 2017- is that you'll get an R, and then you'll see. Now, this will bring you to the Download page.

And what we want to click on is the Download R for Mac OS X link. MATT DENNY : there's a whole journal for R software- manuals, and FAQs. And what this stands for is not cranberry, but the Comprehensive R Archive Network. You can either follow the link that I provided, or you can just type into Google. The next thing to do is to type into Google. It will make your computer more powerful and more useful Don't worry too much about why or whether you should. So that's the first thing that I would suggest that you do, is you should download the command line tools. But if you run this- let's go back here- you should get a little window that pops up that says, hey, XCode select command requires the command line So this won't work for me, because I already have command line tools installed.

What you would do here is you would run this line of code It's a nice little terminal app that kind of looks cooler than a regular terminal. So your terminal is not going to look exactly the same as mine. And then once we've opened up our little terminal- that'll take a second to- would you like to check for updates? We would find our terminal, which lives in Utilities, and then Terminal. So the way we would do this is we would go into our applications folder. This is how I figured out how to install XCode command line tools. And this is what I'm actually going to link to. So the first thing that pops up should be this article. And I'm going to type in XCode command line tools. So I'm here in my desktop, and I'm going to open up Google Chrome. MATT DENNY : And so I'm going to quickly walk you through the process. These will install things like compilers and other libraries that will allow you to link up other programming languages to R and make it faster and more effective and more flexible, especially in terms of how you extend the functionality of R. And so what this will allow you to do is access more functionality from R later. MATT DENNY : I'm going to recommend that you install the XCode command line tools first. It's a package that you can just install, and it'll just work on most modern Mac computers. MATT DENNY : right above this screencast that you can follow to actually download R and also XCode command line tools. There will also be some links in the written materials And I'm just going to quickly walk you through this to make sure that we prevent any issues when you're installing R.
